This is one of my favorite areas. I'll show you some highlights.
First picture is the ship lift (plan incline) in Arzwiler in the northern Vosges. The ships gain or loose 45m altitude in a few minutes. Before building this lift it took 17 locks (a whole day for a ship) and caused frequent traffic jams.
Near to it is Rocher Dabo, an isolated hill with a church where pope Leo IX was born. Nice view from the viewing platform at the top of the church.
Further in the south the mountain Donon. A holy mountain for the ancient Celtic and Roman people. They worshipped their god Vosegus (therefore the area is named Vosges). The reconstruction of the temple was initiated by Napoleon.
We skip the medium vosges mountains (the only noteworthy place is a very sad memorial) and continue to the south Vosges in Ste. Marie-aux-Mines.
There the famous Route des Cretes begins. We ride over
Col des Baganelles 905m
Col du Pre de Raves 1005m
Climb even further to 1060m along an unnamed mountain
Col du Bonhomme 945m
Col du Louchbach 978m
Col du Calvarie 1134m
To the Gazon du Faing hill more. I strongly recommend walking up to the Gazon du Faing (1302m) to see the eastern cliffs.
The ride continues along
Col le Tanet 1230m
Col de la Schlucht 1139m
Col de Trois Fours 1200m
and then don't miss the detour to Summit Hohneck 1363m. It's far and wide the highest point you can reach on a tarmaced road. Snow in June!
Col du Herrenberg 1186m
Col de Hahnenbrunnen 1180m
Le Markstein 1225m (ski resort)
Col du Haag 1233m
Col le Grand Ballon 1343m
near the top of the highest Vosges mountain Grand Ballon, 1424m.
Unfortunately mutilated with a radar station.
But if the weather is dry and clear I nevertheless recommend the hike. Because in the far distance you may see the snowy white Alps with their +4000m mountains.
The descent begins,
Col Amic 828m
Col du SIlberloch 906m
Col de Herrenfluh 855m
And finally you are down in Cernay. But you propably will never ride again sooo many mountains passes within a few (90) kilometres.
